I'm Angry -- And You Should Be Too!

I've seen a lot in my time in politics, and it is easy to become rather jaded about political rhetoric, even from the other side. But I get pretty hot under the collar when I read these remarks from Karl Rove:

Liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers. Conservatives saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war. Conservatives saw what happened to us on 9/11 and said we will defeat our enemies. Liberals saw what happened to us and said we must understand our enemies.

Baloney! (I'd like to use stronger language than that...)

Look, after 9/11, Democrats and Republicans alike were united in our resolve to take the fight to our attackers. Once we learned that Al Qaeda had done this to us, I don't know of a single Democratic leader, liberal or moderate, who would have made the argument that it was not time to go to war, and win a war, against them.

I was Chair of the Fremont County Dems back then. If I recall correctly, 9/11 fell in the middle of the week (Tuesday?). That Saturday was one of our three major parades in Fremont County. The Democratic Party had an entry. Rather than being partisan, we walked along the parade route with flags singing patriotic tunes. Heck, I even made a banner that said something like "Fremont Democrats Support our Nation and Our President."

9/11 was not a time for division or debate, but a time for resolve. President Bush had the benefit of a nation united in the desire to win this war. What did he do with that unity? He destroyed it with divisive rhetoric, policies, and a war against an enemy that was not an immediate threat to us. He did all of this at the expense of our fight in Afghanistan.

We have Hussein. We do not have Bin Laden. Bin Laden is the bigger threat, and we need national leadership that understands that.

I am sick and tired of being told by Republican leaders that I'm not a patriotic enough American. And I think America's getting pretty tired of hearing that from Rove & Co., too.

It is time for him to go.
