What's In the Water?

Lots of news this weekend -- two pretty big developments; one I've seen all over, the other is something I've heard but not seen yet in print.

Everybody's seen by now the news that GOP Treasurer Mike Coffman is leaving his post to serve in the Marines in Iraq. Some questions seem to remain about exactly how that will all come about, with some folks arguing that Coffman will be returning to the job of Treasurer when he comes back from his 7-month tour of duty, State Constitution notwithstanding.

But the other news (rumor?) I heard from multiple sources over the weekend was that Secretary of State Donetta Davidson was also taking an early bow in order to take a HAVA-related post in DC. If true, this would mean that all of the constitutional elected officers next year (other than the Gov and Lt Gov) will have been appointed, not elected. The political implications are interesting, especially when you consider that the Democratic State Senate must confirm any nominees.

The political impacts of both of these decisions (again, assuming the SOS rumor to be true) are huge, and contain both positive and negatives for the Democrats. But the most interesting of the impacts would be the impact of the SOS decision as it applies to Coffman's decision. It is generally accepted that Coffman wants to run for SOS; however, if Davidson resigns, Owens may very well appoint a new SOS who could run as an incumbent from the office, making it more difficult for Coffman to win a primary... Stay tuned...
