IDEA: Lincoln County: Pencils for Students
NOTE: One of the parts I liked about the DemNotes newsletter, and that needs to continue, is the ability to share ideas from one county to the next. The best and most effective innovations do not come from the DNC or the State Party -- they come from the local parties. With that in mind, I've added a "category" called "Ideas". As I go around the state and see or hear of interesting ideas, I'll post them to DemNotes. You will be able to see all of them by clicking on the "Ideas" category on the right of the main page.
At the Lincoln County Reorg, Jim Bowen, the new Chair, had an intriguing idea that had some resonance. He is working on a plan to get some pencils with a phrase like: Democrats Are Fighting for a Better Education (or something like that). Then, his goal is to get a cup of these pencils on every teacher's desk in the county. When a student comes in without his or her pencil (as apparently happens quite often), the teacher can give the student one of the free pencils provided by the Party.
One drawback might be an objection to the distribution of "partisan" items at school, but there's no cost to the school, and no requirement that kids use these pencils, that teachers distribute them, or that the Republicans don't do something similar, so it still might fly.
